Real Choice will open in September 2011 as the only specialist college for students with severe or profound and multiple learning disabilities in County Durham. Programmes will be individually tailored to meet students’ needs and include accredited courses in land based studies, outdoor activities and life skills with close links to the community. High priority will be given to encouraging independence, postural management, communication, sensory and therapy programmes. Staff are trained in communication systems, moving and handling, behaviour management, medication, feeding and have worked for many years in a very successful school for children with complex needs. There will be close links with therapy services whose programmes will be integrated into activities throughout the day.
