General Description of College:
The Royal National College for the Blind (RNC) is the UK’s leading specialist residential college for learners (16+) with sight loss.
RNC is based in Hereford in the West Midlands, approximately 55 miles from three major cities (Bristol, Birmingham and Cardiff).
In a recent (2008) Care Standards Inspection, Education watchdogs Ofsted described RNC’s overall quality rating as ‘outstanding’.
The Curriculum:
Programmes offered at RNC are the same as in mainstream education, although delivery is perfectly accessible for learners with visual impairment.
Independence is at the heart of our curriculum and includes Braille, Communication, Literacy, Living Skills, Mobility, Transitional Skills, Numeracy, Study Skills and Enabling Technology.
The average student/teacher ratio is 4:1
Specialist Facilities:
The Flexible Learning Centre with the latest assistive technology and learning resources is open seven days a week.
Purpose-built Halls of Residence, with en-suite single study bedrooms, are a few minutes walk away from main campus.
Leisure facilities include a social club and common rooms, plus a brand new purpose-built Sports and Complementary Health Centre with fitness studio, sports hall, floodlit all-weather football pitch, hydrotherapy pool and spa.
Learner Support Services are provided by qualified staff.
