General Description of College:
Whitegates is a small college dedicated to promoting quality of life for people with autism, providing learning opportunities via individual programmes and a bespoke curriculum
The Curriculum:
The ‘Stepping Stones’ curriculum is designed, developed and delivered exclusively by Whitegates. Its core focuses on the main features of the autism condition – communication, social interaction and imagination.
The needs of all students with ASC are met through the provision of individual programmes based on the framework of the core curriculum and additional studies either vocational or academic. A wide range of additional qualifications can be accessed with specialist support.
Specialist Facilities:
The college has small teaching groups (around four students average) and each has the pastoral support of a personal tutor.
Good use is made of the facilities to provide a warm and friendly supportive environment, where anxieties are reduced, helping prepare students to maximise learning opportunities. College time is highly structured and a 50 week provision is available.
Students have access to specialist tuition, high levels of learner support, individually planned behaviour strategies, speech and language therapy, Connexions advisers and transition planning.
