Residential Specialist Colleges: 90% good or outsanding

Dame Christine Lenehan is currently undertaking a review of residential specialist schools and colleges. Natspec welcomes the review and is preparing evidence regarding the experience of students, the skills of the workforce, and the outcomes achieved at residential colleges. To support this, we have collated extracts from the most recent Ofsted reports of residential specialist colleges, identifying a range of good practice examples. 90% of colleges are good or outstanding, and the evidence in this paper demonstrates the progress made by students.  Examples from the Ofsted reports include:

  • “students are enthusiastic about life at college”
  • “students integrate successfully into the wider community”
  • “progression into independent or supported living is outstanding”
  • “learning takes place in realistic situations”
  • “learners practice domestic skills in their residences and learn to be independent”
  • “specialist therapists, education and residential staff work together creatively and collaboratively”
  • “parents and carers value the provision…many seeing levels of independence and achievement they had not thought possible”
  • “good accommodation and excellent resources lead to a high quality educational experience for learners, stimulating and motivating them to succeed.”
